Simulated settingTo hang a koinobori, use a securely fixed support and leave enough room for the carp to extend and turn with the wind. A suitable pole often works well in a garden; on a balcony, a safe fixing point and clear space are essential. Indoors, the carp can be suspended as a textile decoration without necessarily filling with air.
Where will it catch the breeze?
Before choosing a support, watch the place. In the same garden, a breeze may pass between two trees and disappear beside a wall. A high balcony is not automatically windier than a sheltered terrace. Look at leaves, grasses or washing on a line. They reveal a good deal about how the air moves.
The position must also be clear. A koinobori does not simply stretch out in one fixed direction: it turns when the breeze changes. A branch, sharp edge or cable can catch the fabric. Allow clearance around its possible path, not just in front of its mouth.
What support works in a garden?
A bamboo pole can look lovely. In fact, I used to hang my little carp from bamboo sticks as a child in Japan. But a pleasant childhood memory is not an installation guide. The strength and anchoring of any pole must be checked, especially if it is tall or exposed.
A purpose-suited outdoor support, correctly selected for the ground and properly secured, is better than an improvised arrangement. The cord should allow the carp to turn without tangling. Never assume that a swivel or other small fitting can make up for a weak support.
Then consider the view. An open sky brings out the colours; in front of a hedge, some designs appear much denser. Moving the display a few steps may make all the difference.
Can you hang one on a balcony?
Yes, provided the building rules and safety conditions allow it. On a balcony, the main concerns are the fixing, the movement of the fabric and the possibility of something falling onto people below. Use a suitable arrangement, never a makeshift attachment.
Measure the actual space, including railings, walls and windows. A short carp may be more convenient, but even a small one can catch on a rough surface if poorly positioned. A balcony without much airflow can still display the drawing; it simply will not produce the movement of a fully inflated windsock.
What about a terrace?
A terrace sometimes gives you more freedom. A koinobori can hang near plants, stand out against a pale wall or face the garden. Keep it away from busy walkways, heat sources, sharp objects and unstable furniture.
Think about how the drawing looks from a distance. A finely detailed carp will not read in quite the same way from two metres away and from the far end of the garden. Give the design room to open, but never put the visual effect ahead of safety.
Can it be suspended in a bedroom?
Yes. Indoors, a koinobori is displayed for its drawing rather than its movement. In a child’s room, keep cords and fittings out of reach and never hang it above a bed or cot. Our article Can You Hang a Koinobori in a Bedroom? covers these precautions and display ideas in detail.
What size should you choose?
BCDG designs are offered, depending on the model, in lengths of 50, 75 or 100 cm. These are lengths of the carp, not minimum dimensions for the entire installation. The space required depends on the support, possible movement and surroundings.
Do not choose from a photograph alone. Measure the space and check the actual variants and dimensions on the product page. If it is a present, consider where the recipient will be able to hang it. A beautiful design that cannot be displayed may end up in a cupboard.
What should you check afterwards?
Make sure the fitting is not moving excessively and the cord is neither trapped nor twisted. Watch the carp in a moderate breeze. If it repeatedly touches a wall or branch, move it.
Check for rubbing, wear and changing weather. Take the carp down in strong winds or hazardous conditions. Follow the care and storage instructions for the particular model. The nylon characteristics described on the product pages do not remove the need for care.
A koinobori does not need elaborate staging. Clear space, a sound fixing and a little sky are a very good start.
