Simulated settingYes. Koinobori can be used for weddings, birthdays, new-baby celebrations, family gatherings and ceremonies, indoors or outside as the setting allows. You may choose existing designs or ask BCDG to consider a custom drawing. For private customers, bespoke projects start at 50 pieces per design; this is distinct from buying an existing catalogue design.
Why choose koinobori for a celebration?
Event decoration needs balance. It should be noticed without overwhelming the place or the people gathered there. Koinobori can be suspended above the ground, leaving room for guests while introducing shapes and colour into the space.
Outside, the breeze brings movement. Indoors, the fabric carp can form a hanging composition, provided it is installed safely. Either way, the starting point is the drawing and its colours, followed by the position.
The Japanese tradition may add meaning, particularly for the birth of a child or a children’s celebration. But it need not be the reason. You may simply like the form, the patterns and the way the carp looks.
How might koinobori work at a wedding?
In a garden, a few carp along the edge of a reception area can accompany the route guests take. On a terrace, they may give character to a part of the setting that would otherwise be bare. Use suitable fixings, account for wind and keep the display clear of walkways.
It is often best to begin with the wedding’s colours. Floral drawings may suit a spring ceremony. Sea-inspired designs could work well near the coast. A simple graphic composition may be preferable where the setting already has plenty of detail.
You do not need fifty carp to create an effect. One or two catalogue designs can be enough for a small event, subject to availability. The number should suit the place, not an arbitrary rule.
What about birthdays and family parties?
A child’s birthday offers a natural connection with koinobori through Kodomo no Hi. For an adult’s birthday, the reason might be quite different: a memory of Japan, an affection for flowers, a coastal journey or a favourite colour.
The same carp can have two lives. It decorates the gathering, then finds a place in a garden, on a balcony or indoors after the celebrations. The fixing may change, but the drawing remains.
For the arrival of a baby, some families will appreciate the carp’s association with courage and perseverance. Others may simply choose a design suited to the child’s room. Both approaches make sense.
Do you need a bespoke drawing?
Not necessarily. First consider whether an existing design already appeals to you. Sea, Patterns, Hanami, Kaïro and Lands offer very different visual approaches. Choosing from the catalogue avoids the planning involved in creating something specifically for an event.
A bespoke project becomes interesting when the occasion has a particular visual identity: chosen colours, a family motif, a theme or a memory worth evoking.
It is worth deciding what the drawing really needs to show. Three strong ideas usually work better than a crowded collection of symbols.
What is the minimum order for custom koinobori?
For private customers, BCDG considers custom-design projects from 50 pieces per design, so three different designs mean 150 koinobori. That threshold applies to the creation of a bespoke drawing, not to the purchase of existing products. It does not mean you need fifty carp to decorate a wedding.
Prices, available sizes, timing and feasibility must be agreed for each project. Contact us early, particularly if the event date cannot move.
Business and public-sector projects follow separate terms, described in the relevant sections of the site.
What should you tell us about your event?
A few details will help: the type of celebration, date, approximate quantity, preferred sizes and the colours or motifs you have in mind.
A photograph of the venue may be useful when discussing how the carp could be displayed. Reference images can also help us understand your taste, without being treated as drawings to copy.
We prefer precise conversations to vague promises. A drawing is made through choices, not advertising language.
What happens to the koinobori afterwards?
It is worth considering this before the event. Where appropriate, guests might take a carp home as a memento. Others can be kept by the family and displayed later, or used again for another celebration, provided they remain in suitable condition.
An object that finds a place after the guests have left seems more interesting to us than decoration forgotten the following morning.
